my voice is my light

In the middle of the night
My voice is my light
And in my bed
To ward off the dread
In my bed
I’m singing with you
What more have we got to do?
What more have we got?
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
I’m singing with you
Wherever you are

They call me out
They call me in
They make me feel at home in my own skin
It’s enough to feel like I can be
Good to you
I’m working with the light
Every day I like
I’m saving up my might
When they’re right I’m right
It’s enough to feel like I can be
Good to you
Facsimile of life
I choose not to believe
The world may want to pry
But I choose not to perceive
It’s enough to feel like I can be
Good to you
They call me out
They call me in
They make me feel at home in my own skin

It’s a slippery slope
I don’t think I can step back
You give me hope
But you don’t cut me slack
Are you still grieving me
I haven’t left
I haven’t left
Pleased to meet you at the end of the world
It’s me, babygirl
Pleased to meet you at the end of the world
It’s me, babygirl
I’m sorry for being here now
I had to make it clear somehow
That you were on my side
When I couldn’t run and I couldn’t hide
I split open your mending unfurled
It’s me, babygirl
Pleased to meet you at the end of the world
It’s me, babygirl
Broke myself open and there was a pearl
And there was a pearl
Pleased to meet you at the end of the world
It’s me, babygirl

I’ve been waiting for you
I’ve been waiting for you
I’ve seen you in your ways (in your ways)
In your ways, in your ways
Every day
I’ve been waiting in your ways
I should not have gone
I’ve been waiting for you
I’ve been waiting for you
I’ve seen you in your ways (in your ways)
In your ways, in your ways
Every day

Every now and then
There will be a problem you can’t solve
And at night nothing will be right
And in the day nothing will be safe
Against your wishes it will stay
You will try to throw it away
But what you’ll miss in your haste
Its resemblance to your face
Flower petals lye and lace
Perfectly it’ll lie in place
It could all be wonderful
You’d never seen the sun so full
If you could untie this one knot in your brain
If you could untie this one knot in your brain
Get it out of me
Get it out of me please
Little by little like a splinter

underneath your mask

|

Underneath your mask
I can see your lips
Behind your back
I whisper
I wanna give you a kiss
Lay down
I know you’re tired
I know you’re pretty
I know you’re inspired
I know you’re with me
I know you’re silly when you wanna be
And you wanna be
Mask above you
I will love you
Mask below you
I see your truth
Underneath your mask
You can be far when you’re close to me
Underneath your mask
When you need me just ask
You know you mean the most to me

My love is a sound
Sound that you hear in me
My love is a sound
Sound that you’re hearing now
Your voice comes around
And I swear
Your voice is an orchestra
Violin, cello, bass
Concert band in your face
It blows up my world
Feelin’ free as a bird
Flying over you
Hanging on each and every word
Word that you say
Every word that you say
Every word
My love is a sound
My love is a sound
Your voice comes around
And I swear
Your voice is an orchestra
Violin, cello, bass
Concert band in your face
Violin, cello, bass
Concert band in your face
It blows up my world
Feelin’ free as a bird
Hanging on each and every word
Word that you say
Every word that you say
Every word, every way
I would never ever trade
Hearing what you have to say

Sending signs through rivers that shine it’s
Never too late
Currents left behind you
Love does find you
Didn’t mean to break
Didn’t mean to bend
Could’ve been a fan
Could’ve been a friend
Could’ve made a deal
Could’ve made a stand
You could’ve been someone else
Instead you were yourself
You could’ve been someone else
I’m thankful for your help
The little bit that we said
Carried over in my head

Tea kettle singing off the top of my head
The rain fell and flooded the watershed
In the shower I headed nowhere but the drain
I was the rain gauge, I was the weather vane
I make my body a pressure cooker, I turn to steam. I open my pores to be poured over. I pour out of myself like a tea kettle singing a song off the top of my head. When we knew each other I would press my hands into your back in the shower. In the shower I headed nowhere but the drain. The rain fell and flooded the tub like a watershed. I was the rain gauge, I was the weather vane, I was vain whether or not you deserved it. I deserved to look and to be in my own reflection.
Turn fruit, turn root, turn flesh
When we knew each other I knew you less
In the self-checkout line I check out myself. Turn fruit, turn root, turn flesh, turn to sweetness in my own hands. When we knew each other I knew you less than the seed of the seedless orange. You knew me as a kernel dense with water and ready to burst.
The places where I grow rough
Faster than I can catch up
Tear the skin off
A hundred satsumas
In the winter I know my body better than the summer– I have to feel it more, touch my skin with oil in all places but especially where it scales. This is the closest I know of myself, the places where I grow rough faster than I can catch up. I tear off the skin of a hundred satsumas, leave them smelling like winter on the couch, the kitchen table, the dresser. What does the garden give us in the storm? What grows tender and rough in the snow? What do I know?
What does the garden give us
In the storm
What grows tender and rough
In the snow
What do I know
What do I know

deadnamed

I know you wouldn’t dare
I got deadnamed in my dream
By some guy
I wasn’t that surprised
But I wished I hadn’t closed my eyes
That’s not my name
I wasn’t that surprised
But I wished I hadn’t closed my eyes
That’s not my name, not my name, not my name, not my name
I got deadnamed in my dream
By some guy
I wasn’t that surprised
But I’m starting to survive my life

One day in my room
There arose a groove
So great it was noticed
In space
Aliens heard this groove
They said “Oh,
Oh my dude,
We like this,
This is great.”
They played it for their friends
Their friends played it for their enemies
Intergalactic peace
The groove in my room
Was so great
I had a party
At the party
Aliens arrived
They said
“Oh my god, oh my god.
This groove sounds even better up close.”
Finally I spoke
I said “This groove is not mine.”
They said “What?”
I said “This groove is not mine."
(Wait what’s she saying?)
“This groove is Ryan’s groove.
He’s playing the guitar.
He’s the real star.”
Ryan replied
“That’s very kind of you to say,
But you made this groove.
You made this groove today.”
I had a party
We tried to ignore the awkward
Conversation about whose
Groove this was
And just enjoy the groove
For what it was

Don’t mean to hurt you
But I best be on my way
Oh the sky is a pretty purple with a little bit of pink
It’s hopeless now you’ve lost your crown
Yeah the kickback from the water
Never floating back together again
The love is gone it can’t be found
He will never be whole
Can’t be found
He’ll never be whole
